features

butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan of about 25 to 32 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings is brownish. There is a whitish transverse band between the root and middle field as well as between the middle and edge field. The dark middle field is jagged on both sides. The outer transverse line delimits the central field and usually shows a clearly protruding double point formed in the direction of the hem. The fringing area is heavily darkened below the apex . The hind wings shimmer gray and are provided with a strongly curved dark transverse line.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars have a brown basic color. There are red-brown to black-brown angular spots on the back. The posterior segments are lighter brown.

Similar species

The marsh weed spider ( Lampropteryx otregiata ) is smaller with a wingspan of 21 to 26 millimeters and differs in the bulbous, more rounded bulge of the outer transverse line.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The species is widespread in Europe, but is absent in Greece, some Mediterranean islands, and Iceland. The occurrence area also includes the Urals , the Altai Mountains , Kamchatka and Japan . It has also been found in some northern parts of North America, such as Alberta , British Columbia and Alaska . The bedstraw spider is preferred in mountain and hill country, especially in beech and spruce forests, on bushy forest edges as well as on forest meadows and heaths.

Way of life

The main flight time of the crepuscular and nocturnal moths covers the months April to June. They occasionally suckle on blooming pussy willows ( Salix ) or barberries ( Berbera vulgaris ) and are attracted to artificial light sources . The caterpillars' forage plants include different types of bedstraw ( Galium ), including the woodruff ( Galium odoratum ). They live from May to July. The pupa hibernates.

Danger

The bedstraw spider is on the red list of endangered species as not endangered.
