The Raukokore River is a river in the northeast of the North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The river rises on the northwest side of the Raukumara Range halfway between the two mountains Raukumara (1414 m) and Potts Peak (1426 m). The headwaters are located at an altitude of about 1200 m, near Mount Honokawa and are thus in the Gisborne District . The river runs in large arcs and loops northwest towards the Pacific Ocean and flows into the sea in Papatea Bay a few kilometers southwest of Raukokore . The river has a water catchment area of 352 km².
State Highway 35 , which runs from Opotiki to Gisborne , crosses the river in the estuary .
use
Since the river has a relatively large water catchment area for the northeast region of the North Island, the Raukokore River was also included in the consideration for the construction of a dam and hydropower plant in 2004 . It was given a potential of 145 GWh per year for the generation of electrical energy. The construction of a 35 MW hydropower plant could have generated this energy. However, a decision to build such a power plant has not yet been taken.
In 2011 there was a plan to use the water of the river for about 150-200 inhabitants of the 5 km northeast of the settlement Waihau and for irrigation of their agriculture for the cultivation of 1200 to 2000 hectares of kiwi fruits .
