Raul Gardini
Raul Gardini (born June 7, 1933 in Ravenna , † July 23, 1993 in Milan ) was an Italian entrepreneur and agronomist .
Life
Gardini studied agricultural science. Gardini was married to Idina Ferruzzi. After the death of his father-in-law Serafino Ferruzzi in 1979 in a plane crash, Gardini took over the company successor of the Ferruzzi Group. This family business owned entire tracts of land in South America and had oil mills and sugar refineries. Gardini controlled the extensive Ferruzzi Group, including the insurance company La Fondiaria from Florence . This insurance company acquired 25 percent of Volksfürsorge in Hamburg, which had been for sale for a long time, in 1988 , as did the German group Aachener und Münchener Beteiligungs-AG (AMB). In 1987, 40 percent of the Italian company Montedison was acquired and later the majority in Montedison was acquired. In France, he acquired the majority in the French sugar and paper company Béghin-Say . For 630 million dollars he bought the European holdings of the American food company Corn Products International (now Ingredion ) from Illinois. At the end of the 1980s, he controlled around 45 percent of all national grain imports in Italy through the family company.
The takeover of the Italian energy company Eni in 1990 by the majority-controlled company Montedison, however, failed after family members rebelled under the leadership of his brother-in-law Carlo Sama.
Gardini, whose hobbies were horse riding, hunting and sailing, owned the sailing yacht Il Moro di Venezia ( Moor of Venice ), whose captain was temporarily Dennis Conner . In Venice he owned the Palazzo Dario on the Grand Canal . In Argentina he owned the agricultural estate Estancia Las Cabezas near Buenos Aires, measuring 20,000 hectares . In the course of the legal investigation of Mani pulite , Gardini came under suspicion of corruption and prosecutors were investigating him in Milan. 1993 Gardini committed under still unexplained circumstances, suicide .
