etymology

Little is known about the origin of the name. It is assumed that at that time the origin of the name could not be explained and that it was associated with the word "rush", which means "rush". From then on, the mountain was called "Ruschberg". In the course of time this developed into the name "Rauschenberg".

geography

On the edge of the Fulda basin, 2.5 km northeast of the city of Fulda in the Hessian Rhön , lies the 471 meter high Rauschenberg, the "unequal twin" of the Petersberg. The wooded basalt dome and the observation tower are now part of the Petersberg community . The total area of the Rauschenberg is 27 hectares .

Bomb search

In October 2017 stick incendiary bombs from the Second World War were found during the renovation of a forest hut on the Rauschenberg . Since many bombs fell on the Rauschenberg during the war due to its proximity to the city and the train station, the community feared that even more remains of ammunition might turn up, and closed the paths off the hiking trails.

Another problem arose in the summer of 2019: Because of the prolonged drought, 60 trees on the Rauschenberg had died and threatened to topple over. However, due to the possible bombs, they could not be felled. The community then had to close the hiking trails in the forest area as well.

The areas that were closed in October 2017 have not been reopened to this day, as no authority wants to assume the estimated costs of one to two million euros.

The Petersberg community first wrote to the Federal Ministry of Defense and was referred there to the State of Hesse , as security is fundamentally the responsibility of the federal states. At the Hessian Ministry of Finance , the community was then forwarded to the Hessian Ministry of the Interior , currently it has not yet been clarified who will pay for the costs of the bomb disposal measures.

Hiking trails

The Rauschenberg and its surroundings are a local recreation area on the outskirts of the Petersberg community. The developed circular routes are popular destinations for joggers and walkers. The 2.9 km long circular route leads around the Rauschenberg and offers hikers a view of the Rhön landscape and the baroque city of Fulda. Around the northern side of the mountain you get to the Rauschenberghütte. The path continues along the edge of the forest until it finally ends again at the parking lot.

The second 2.6 km long circular route leads through the forest of the Rauschenberg, past the Rauschenberghütte and on towards the mountain summit.
