The bogus ghost pipefish ( Solenostomus paegnius ) lives in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of East Africa to Australia , Malaysia and Indonesia and north to southern Japan .
features
The species becomes twelve centimeters long and is variably colored brown to red or more or less bright green and often marbled white. The numerous, fringe-like skin protrusions, especially on the underside of the snout, are striking. Shorter skin protrusions can also be found on the top of the snout. In many individuals the head, body and fins are completely covered by "hairy" filaments.
- Fin formula : dorsal V / 18-21, anal 18-21.
Way of life
The fish initially live pelagic and only when they reach their maximum size do they reproduce and return to the ground. They then live in algae rock and rubble reefs over sandy and soft soils from just below the water surface to depths of less than ten meters. As with all ghost pipefish, the females form a brood pouch with their pelvic fins and carry the eggs around with them until the young fish hatch. They feed on hover shrimp (Mysida) and other small crustaceans.
