Ray W. Barker
Ray W. Barker (born December 10, 1889 in New York , † June 28, 1974 ) was a major general in the Allied Forces and served in Europe during World War II .
Major General Barker was a key figure in the combined American-British planning group known as COSSAC ( Chief of Staff to the Supreme Allied Commander ) . This group planned the Allied attack on mainland Europe, code-named Operation Overlord . This attack was intended to free France. From 1943 to 1945 he served as deputy chief of the COSSAC staff or SHAEF , where he was also Assistant Chief of Staff for Personnel ( G-1 ).
From May 16 to 22, 1945, Barker and Lieutenant General KD Golubew met with representatives of the Soviet Reparation Authority in Halle (Saale) . The framework for the talks in Halle was laid during the Yalta conference . During the talks in Halle it was clarified how the Western Allied prisoners of war can return to their homeland as quickly as possible. The conference lasted until the early hours of May 22, 1944. Barker and Golubev signed the treaty, which went into effect the following day.
At the end of 1945 he became commander of the American sector in Berlin and commander of the 78th US division stationed there. As such, he was also responsible for demilitarization measures in his area of command.
After leaving the military in 1946, Ray Barker became the headmaster of a military school for boys in Manlius / New York . He ran this school until his retirement in 1960.
