Robert G. Fergusson
Robert George Fergusson (born May 20, 1911 in Illinois , † August 10, 2001 in Pebble Beach ) was an American officer and major general in the United States Army . Fergusson was in command of the American sector in Berlin from June 1967 to February 1970 .
Life
General Fergusson entered West Point in 1932 after attending Beloit College in Wisconsin . His first assignment after graduation was as 2nd Lieutenant with the 11th U.S. Cavalry in Monterey , California. In late 1938 Fergusson was appointed adjutant to Major General HT Burgin and accompanied him to Hawaii , where Burgin served as chief of artillery. Fergusson was then stationed at the Hawaiian Artillery Sea Shore and Air Defense Headquarters at Fort De Russy , Waikiki , Hawaii. He stayed there until after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941.
In May 1942 Fergusson returned to California as commander of the 7th Mechanized Reconnaissance Wing of the 7th Motorized Division . Shortly thereafter, the division was converted to the 7th Infantry Division and Fergusson took over a position on the division's general staff . He was to take part in the Aleutian , Central Pacific and Filipino campaigns in the Pacific theater of war . In 1945 Fergusson was appointed intelligence officer of the Central Army Pacific Base Command in Hawaii. At the end of the war he was promoted to colonel. He served as Deputy Head of Intelligence for the Eighth Army during the Korean War in 1950 . Fergusson was named Deputy Chief of Staff of the US Army Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii in 1954 .
In 1961 Fergusson was promoted to brigadier general and transferred as deputy division commander to the 24th Infantry Division in Augsburg . After serving as Chief of Staff of the Central Army Group of NATO in Heidelberg from 1962 to 1965 , he returned to the United States. In 1965 General Fergusson was transferred to Fort Ord , where he served as base commander until 1967 and commanded the 7th Infantry Division. Before retiring in 1970, Fergusson served as Commander of the American Sector of Berlin and Commander of the US Forces in Berlin from June 1967 to February 1970 .

Fergusson was married to Charlotte L. Fergusson, b. Lawrence (1913-2013). During his time in Berlin, his 24-year-old son Robert J. Fergusson died in the Vietnam War in 1967 .
