life and work

Illustration by the Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff as a "tribute to the missing documentary filmmaker Raymundo Gleyzer and to all the missing victims of the US-backed right-wing dictatorships in South America"

Born into a Jewish family, Gleyzer became interested in politics and film from an early age . He put all of his films at the service of the fight against social injustice and for the revolution .

He shot his first film in the backward northeast of Brazil , where he barely escaped with his life. In the early 1970s he made a film in Mexico about the so-called “ institutionalized revolution ” of the state party PRI. The film was initially banned in Argentina, but found a lively response among students in Mexico. In 1973 he and others founded the group Cine de la Base , which organized screenings and discussions with workers outside the cinema.

His last major film, Los traidores , is his critique of the Peronism political movement, which was very important in Argentina at the time . It shows how union officials had allied themselves with entrepreneurs, the military and the USA in order to maintain their personal position of power and to enrich themselves .

On May 27, 1976, Gleyzer was kidnapped, tortured and never seen again by a death squad of the military government that had come to power two months earlier . He is one of the tens of thousands of " Desaparecidos " ( disappeared ) of the Argentine military dictatorship of the time , most of whom were secretly murdered. The Brazilian cartoonist Carlos Latuff created a cartoon that he dedicated to Gleyzer and the people of Latin America who "disappeared" by force .
