Recode (previously Re / code ) is an American technology blog that reports on American technology companies (mainly from Silicon Valley ). Recode holds annual conferences , the most important of which is the Code Conference in May . Recode was founded by the two technology journalists Walter Mossberg and Kara Swisher in January 2014. Recode has been a subsidiary of Vox Media since May 2015 .

history

In September 2013, the two technology journalists Walter Mossberg and Kara Swisher left the AllThingsD website they founded , a subsidiary of Dow Jones & Company . Mossberg also quit his job as a journalist on a weekly tech column for the Wall Street Journal at the end of the same year. Shortly afterwards, on January 2, 2014, the two colleagues founded Re / code , an independent website with journalistic articles and blogs on the technology division. The investment volume was estimated at 10-15 million US dollars. In addition to Mossberg and Swisher themselves, NBCUniversal and the leading editors of Re / code also made investments. The estimated market value at the time of inception was $ 28 million. Re / code started with 23 employees, including all of AllThingsD's employees such as Peter Kafka and Lauren Goode .

In addition to the website, Recode organizes conferences in the tradition of AllThingsD . The main event is the Code Conference , which is held in Dana Point every May . Other regular conferences are Peter Kafka's Code Media on digital media in February and Jason del Rey's Code Commerce on electronic commerce in September. There are also other events, for example as part of South by Southwest .

Re / code was valued for its journalistic work, but did not achieve the expected level of popularity with around 2.5 million website visitors. Although the donors would have been ready for further investment, Mossberg and Swisher decided in May 2015 to sell Re / code in full to Vox Media for approximately 15-20 million US dollars; At that time, Re / code had 44 employees and expected a profit of 12 million US dollars in the current financial year, which was mainly due to the successful conferences. The sale to Vox Media promised Mossberg and Swisher greater brand awareness as Vox Media's other subsidiary sites, including the technology website The Verge , had great success. In order to avoid overlapping with The Verge , Re / code now concentrated its reporting on the technology industry and published product reviews on consumer electronics no longer or only in cooperation with The Verge . In the course of this development, Walter Mossberg and Lauren Goode worked mainly at The Verge from now on .

In July 2015, Re / code released its first podcast, Recode Decode . On May 8, 2016, Re / code changed the spelling of its name to Recode and changed the design of the website as part of the switch to Vox Media's content management system Chorus , while Dan Frommer was hired as the new editor-in-chief. In September 2017, the website had around 5.65 million visitors.
