The Realschule am Tor zur Oberpfalz is a state secondary school in the city of Kemnath ( Bavaria ). It is the largest of three secondary schools in the Tirschenreuth district .

history

On April 18, 1950, the town council of Kemnath under Mayor Josef Högl sent a letter to all schools in the district to find out how many pupils would enter a 3-class middle school . Enough registrations were received, so that on October 9, 1950, the Kemnath city council decided to found a state secondary school. Approval by the Bavarian State Ministry took place on November 28, 1950. School operations began with a boys' class in a former garage that was used as a temporary classroom.

Also in October 1950, it was decided to build a single-storey school building that was to be gradually expanded. On March 21, 1951, the district council decided to take over the middle school in the administration of the district. In addition, the funds for the first construction phase of the school building were approved. The building was erected between August 1951 and January 1952. The district council elected in March 1952 then approved the continuation of the construction, so that the original schoolhouse was completed between July 1952 and January 1953.

Because of the growing number of pupils - also due to the expansion of the Realschule from R3 to R4 and since the 2002/03 school year to R6 - the school building had over the decades repeatedly with extensions such as classrooms and specialist rooms, the administration wing, the gym, two playgrounds and the outdoor sports area will be expanded or stocked up. In the 2007/08 school year the number of students had risen to 1001. The acute shortage of space was eliminated by relocating the support center opposite the secondary school to the building of the former Immenreuth elementary school . From autumn 2007, the students could be taught in the main building and the annexed building.

School name

The name "Realschule am Tor zur Oberpfalz", which refers to the location of the school near the neighboring administrative district of Upper Franconia , was given in the 2016/17 school year. For this purpose, Elisabeth Vogel, who works as a teacher at the school, created the current school logo. It consists of the gate to the town square Kemnath, the Kemnath parish church with tower and the nearby Rauher Kulm mountain (Upper Palatinate) .

future

The district council of the Tirschenreuth district decided in November 2018 to build the new school building. For a planned 35.2 million euros, a completely new school building with a triple gym for 850 students will be built on a plot of land of around 21,000 square meters near the current location, probably by 2024. On November 6, 2019, the architecture firm Petry & Voll from Stuttgart won the first prize in the architectural competition with their design for the new secondary school building in the shape of a butterfly. Since no agreement was reached with this office for a realization, the design of the runner-up is now being built. The architects Leinhäupl and Neuber from Landshut will build the new secondary school in Kemnath. The groundbreaking should take place in the first half of 2021.
