Rebecca Enonchong (born 1967 in Cameroon ) is a technology entrepreneur , founder and CEO of AppsTech . She is known for her work promoting technology in Africa. Enonchong has received various awards from organizations such as the World Economic Forum . Forbes listed her as one of the 10 female tech founders to see in Africa in 2014.

Past life and education

Enonchong was born in Cameroon in 1967. Her father was Henry Ndifor Abi Enonchong , a well-known lawyer in Cameroon. As a teenager, Enonchong moved to the United States with her family . During her college years, she began selling house-to-house newspaper subscriptions at the age of 15. She later became a manager there at the age of 17. Enonchong attended Catholic University of America , where she completed a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Economics.

Career

After completing her education, Enonchong worked for a number of organizations including the Inter-American Development Bank (IaDB) and Oracle Corporation . In 1999, Enonchong founded AppsTech, a Bethesda , Maryland-based global provider of enterprise application solutions . AppsTech is an Oracle Platinum Partner and has customers in over 40 countries. AppsTech opened offices in several countries, including in Enonchong's native Cameroon. She describes the experience as difficult and resulted in the closure of AppsTech subsidiaries.

Awards

  • In 2002, the Davos World Economic Forum named Enonchong, along with other tech companies like Google co-founder Larry Page and Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff, as Global Leader for Tomorrow (GLT). In 2013, Enonchong was named a finalist for the African Digital Woman Award.
  • In March 2014, Forbes listed her as one of the "10 Female Tech Founders To Watch In Africa". Enonchong has also become known as one of the most popular sources of African tech news on Twitter, with over 30,000 followers. Her name, @Africatechie, has become a nickname for Enonchong in IT circles.
