Recherches germaniques is an international journal for German studies that was founded in 1971 in Strasbourg by Gonthier-Louis Fink. The magazine is dedicated to scientific work in the field of literature as well as the history of culture and ideas in German-speaking countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland ...). It appears twice a year, both as a free open access magazine and in printed form by the Fondation des Presses Universitaires de Strasbourg . It is edited by Aurélie Choné.
history
The journal Recherches Germaniques was founded in 1971 at the suggestion of a group of Germanists from the Institute for German Studies (Institut d'Études Germaniques) of the Université des Sciences Humaines in Strasbourg (from 1998 Université Marc Bloch, integrated into the new Université de Strasbourg in 2009 ). The journal is one of the university's scientific publications. The first editor was Gonthier-Louis Fink (until 1997), specialist in literature and cultural history of the 18th century.
Two years after the founding of the Revue d'Allemagne , also based in Strasbourg , which was primarily dedicated to the areas of culture, history and politics in German-speaking countries, Recherches Germaniques set itself the main goal of making an annual publication available to the scientific community, who publishes extensive articles in the fields of the German-speaking history of literature, ideas and culture from the Reformation to the present day, without excluding articles from the field of medieval studies. At the same time, the magazine pursued the goal of serving French and international German studies as a forum for exchange. Indeed, according to the definition of such a cross-border publication, Recherches germaniques has developed into an intensive Franco-German exchange organ. With regard to this binational perspective, the scientific advisory board consisted primarily of experts from the neighboring universities of Freiburg im Breisgau, Basel and Karlsruhe.
After a four-year transition period and joint management by Arlette Bothorel, Hildegard Châtellier and Christine Maillard, the latter took over sole editing in 2001. Christine Maillard worked in this capacity until 2013. After the journal had received support from the CNRS for the first two decades , the journal has again enjoyed its scientific recognition since 2007. The scientific advisory board was further internationalized in this context. In addition to the annual editions, the magazine has also published thematic special issues since 2003, for example on the occasion of specialist conferences held in Strasbourg or at other universities. Such volumes, which always contain international contributions, also reflect central trends in the research projects pursued in Strasbourg.
From 2013 to 2018 Aurélie Choné and Catherine Repussard edited the magazine now published by the Presses universitaires de Strasbourg. The scientific advisory board was further enlarged and in 2014 the journal adopted a new layout. Since then, two volumes have been published annually: a yearbook (Varia) and a thematic special (Hors-série). Aurélie Choné has been the editor of the magazine since 2018.
Since January 1, 2019, Recherches germaniques has also been available via the humanities and social sciences online portal OpenEdition . The various editions can now be used as a free digital offer in parallel to publication in printed form.
Editorial orientation and goal setting
As the “capital of Europe” and at the same time a university and border city, Strasbourg is at the intersection of cultural exchange between Germany and France. As a forum for French and international German studies, the journal wants to take account of this special geographic location.
Recherches germaniques is dedicated to scientific work in the fields of literature, the history of culture and ideas in the German-speaking area (Germany, Austria, Switzerland ...). The journal publishes articles by recognized Germanists from all five continents as well as by young academics. The articles pursue classic and more recent research approaches in German studies, some of which show transnational and interdisciplinary or comparative German-French perspectives. The contributions cover a historical field that extends from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.
Publication form
Recherches germaniques is a semi-annual journal for international German studies and publishes an annual collection (Varia) and a themed issue (Hors-série). The written in French or German products undergo a double-blind opinion (double-blind peer review), which guarantees the high scientific level of the journal.
audience
Recherches germaniques aimed at Bachelor - and Master's students to doctoral students of the German language, literature and cultural studies, cultural history and philosophy as well as academics who are interested in German literature, culture and history.
