The Red Slate Mountain is the highest mountain in the Sherwin Range , which is part of the Sierra Nevada is. The mountain is part of the Sierra Crest, which forms the border of Fresno County and Mono County ( California ).
General
The summit of Red Slate Mountain can only be climbed via a via ferrata. One via ferrata starts at McGee Pass, and another starts at Bighorn Lake .
Red Slate Mountain was named by the California Geological Survey in 1873. However, it is unclear whether the name originally applied to this mountain, or the mountain now known as Red-and-White Mountain .

The area north of Red Slate Mountain is the most seismically active area in California. The earthquakes there are connected to the nearby Long Valley Caldera .
