history

On October 30, 1857, Felix Heinrich Schoeller (1821-1893) was granted the concession for converting the roller mill acquired by the Hoesch family into a paper mill. It is located directly on the Rur , which is known for the soft water that is needed for paper production. Ten years later, Schoeller built another pulp mill , which was temporarily managed by his son Felix Hermann Maria Schoeller and run together with the main factory as a general partnership. After Felix Heinrich Schoeller's death, his sons Guido (1850–1898) and Heinrich (1851–1924) took over the company, followed by Heinrich's sons Alfred (1879–1963) and Herbert (1885–1956). They were finally followed by Manfred Schoeller in the management.

On January 1, 1965, the Zanders family under Johann Wilhelm Zanders from Bergisch Gladbach bought the Reflex paper mill in Düren from the Schoeller family . Over the years, the factory has been constantly expanded and the company came to the Finnish paper manufacturer M-real in 2001 via the parent company Zanders Gohrsmühle in Bergisch Gladbach . According to reports in the Bergische Landeszeitung, the Dürener Zeitung and the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger on January 14, 2012, the company M-real Zanders sold the Düren factory Reflex to Hahnemühle FineArt GmbH . With the purchase of the paper mill, the Hahnemühle Group wanted to become one of the leading premium paper manufacturers in Europe with worldwide sales markets and invested seven-figure investments in the renovation. In July 2013, however, the company had to file for bankruptcy. On February 1, 2015, the company was taken over by a family consortium and the paper processor May + Spies.

papers

Before the Second World War , this paper mill was the only one in the Düren area that produced its own cellulose in order to make high-quality letterhead, etc. Then Zanders Reflex specialized in the production of special papers . In addition to premium and digital imaging papers, carbonless papers (SD) were also produced. Since the takeover by Hahnemühle in early 2012, the company has concentrated on premium, scented, transparent, technical and label papers.

business

At the turn of the millennium, the company slipped into the red. Therefore the workforce had to be reduced from 750 to 470 employees (as of October 2007). The annual turnover in 2006 was 150 million euros. Today, 25,000 tons of specialty papers are produced annually on four paper machines.

In 2010 Metsä Tissue , which also operates the Hochkoppelmühle in Untermaubach , bought paper machine 5 with the associated buildings and the power station. This machine, which was previously used to produce fine papers, was converted to produce baking and cooking papers at a cost of 30 million euros. Metsä Tissue has a share of 20,000 tons of the market volume in Europe of around 50,000 tons per year .
