The Reformed Church of Embrach is an important transverse oval church of early Swiss classicism and is a listed building.

history

In the Middle Ages there was a collegiate monastery in the center of what is now Embrach, presumably the Augustinian canons . The foundation walls of the first monastery building, which were uncovered during excavations in 1992, can be dated to the 9th century. The Canon Monastery of St. Peter was pillaged and looted twice in 1386 in the Sempach War and in 1444 in the Old Zurich War . The newly built Gothic collegiate church continued to be used as a reformed church after the decline of the canon monastery and its abolition in the Reformation in 1524. In 1778, however, this church collapsed after an earthquake. The architect David Vogel built the new church from 1779–1780.

description

Exterior

In contrast to the shortly thereafter incurred oval rococo - Church Horgen the design is facades marked already by classical forms. The main facade with the small incorporated front tower is of picturesque simplicity. It is divided into three axes with mighty portals and is crowned by a triangular gable with an oculus and a tooth-cut frieze .

Interior

The floor plan is reminiscent of reformed oval churches such as the church of Chêne-Pâquier : an oval sermon room with benches facing the pulpit wall on the north longitudinal facade. The floor plan can also be interpreted as a square with drawn in semicircular ends on both sides. The U- gallery , which can be entered via stairwells in the front elevation , was laid out in such a way that the pulpit can be seen from everywhere. This room design takes into account the specific needs of the Reformed preaching service.

Apart from the pulpit, the church has hardly any decorative elements. The wooden pulpit basket and the rear wall of the pulpit are decorated with simple classicist decor. During the renovation in 1979 the church received new paneling and a new organ .
