Reformed Church of St. Johann (Schiers)
The Reformed Church of St. Johann in Schiers is the mother church of the Prättigau and stands as Evangelical - Reformed church under the monument of the canton of Grisons . The building was last restored in 1971.
history
There is first documentary evidence of a church building 1101 under the patronage of Johannes . The oldest building structure, which indicates two previous buildings from the 5th and 6th centuries, can be found today in the garden of the neighboring rectory.
In the early years of the Reformation 1519–22, but before the adoption of the same in the Prättigau, a new building was built. After devastation in the course of the Bündner turmoil , this building was restored in 1641, as well as in 1768 after massive fire damage. The church tower dates back to when it was founded and was extended in 1768, and in 1926 a helmet roof was added. A bell from the 18th century is kept on the south outer wall of the church to commemorate the village fire.
In June 2010 the church was the last venue for the Graubünden Synod .
Furnishing
The interior of the church shows a nave with a gallery on the left . The choir is typically covered in Graubünden with a reticulated vault . The pulpit with sound cover dates from the second half of the 18th century. A font in the neo-Gothic style is attached in the center . The monumental organ is more recent and was built into the choir as a dominant element in 1926.
