Reformed Church of Stugl
The Reformed Church in Stugl in Grisons is an Evangelical - Reformed church under cantonal conservation . It stands together with an almost circular cemetery surrounded by a wall and characterizes the village in the middle of the settlement.
history
1270 is documented ownership of the Chur cathedral chapter in Stugl. The current church under the patronage of John is attested in 1523. Stugl accepted the Reformation in 1590 and subsequently broke away from the mother church in Bergün / Bravuogn in 1620 and from the neighboring Latsch in 1689 .
construction
The geostete , almost 10 meters long structure forms a wide rectangle that is covered with a deep accreting which barrel vault. The choir with apse, which tapers towards the east, adjoins this. It is covered with a cross vault, and the tower from the beginning of the 17th century rises above it. What is striking about the tower, which is covered by a pointed helmet with a flattened bottom , is the asymmetrical extension next to the bell window.
On the northern outer wall there are remains of paintings from two different periods. The early Gothic depiction of Christophorus and the former church patron John the Baptist from around 1300 comes from the lower layer on the left . In an upper layer, St. George's fight with the dragon was depicted on the right. This depiction is from the same artist who painted the interior of the church.
A pulpit without a sound cover precedes the choir on the left. In the middle there is a baptismal table on which the Last Supper is celebrated according to the Reformed Graubünden custom .

During a complete renovation in the summer of 1956 under the direction of the architect W. Gattiker, previously covered wall paintings by an unknown painter were exposed by Bonifaz Engler, which cover the entire interior of the church in three strips. The frescoes come from an Italian master from the school of Giotto di Bondone and were probably made around 1360/70.
The middle path is dominated by a mighty representation of Christ in the mandorla in front of the choir arch. What is unusual about it is that Christ is depicted here in the ship and not in the choir as is usual. It is conceivable that the church was still one-room at the time it was painted.
Around it are the four evangelists as hybrid of winged beings and the heads of their symbols . In the western part, the four church fathers are shown in a frontal position behind writing desks.
On the side, as well as depictions of the burial of Mary, the baptism of Christ and the Last Supper, scenes from the Passion of Christ are depicted. The representation of the crowned couple on the left south wall originally extended to the wall of the choir arch. The lower end of the picture webs form horizontal stripes of geometric patterns.
