The Refugio Elola is the most important mountain hut in the Spanish Sierra de Gredos and is located at an altitude of 1945  m directly on the Laguna Grande de Gredos.

Alpinism

The normal route leads from the Plataforma de Gredos car park in the northeast ( 1770  m ) over the Laguna Grande in 2-3 hours to the hut. This serves as a central base for climbing the peaks in Circo de Gredos, or crossing the main ridge to Candeleda or El Raso (Camino del Tío Domingo).

While in summer it is a technically relatively easy, albeit physically demanding, hike, from November to May it can be useful to use crampons , snowshoes or skis to get to the hut.

Furnishing

The Refugio Elola has 65 beds, as well as an additional unmanaged winter room with 8 mattress beds and an emergency two-way radio. There is a washroom and toilet room with running cold water. The kitchen is managed continuously during opening hours and a self-catering kitchen is also available. On weekends and during periods of good weather, it is advisable to reserve in good time and, in the event of overcrowding, to bring a tent that you can pitch on a meadow between Laguna Grande and the refuge.
