In old age, Rittmeister Lorenz Scheibenhart, a veteran of the great war , tells about his life.

Lorenz was born on April 7, 1595 in Braunschweig . His father, the Bader Martin Scheibenhart, was executed on September 17, 1604 as a comrade in Braband . Two months later, Lorenzen's mother was slapped in the face and expelled with the boy from Braunschweig forever. The two expellees fight their way through the unfriendly November with a meager bread ration and find shelter in Wolfenbüttel with Franz Algermann - an arch enemy of the Brunswick people. Duke Heinrich Julius resides in the Wolfenbüttel fortress . The prince lets witches burn.

Mr. Algermann trains Lorenz to be a scribe. In 1611 the boy falls in love with Susanna Roden, the daughter of the landlord "Zum jumpingenden Roß". Lorenz soon loses the beauty to a strange rider with a feather hat on his head - Levin Sander ; later Imperial Rittmeister. In his modest black scribe's robe, Lorenz doesn’t match the rider in the smart doublet . The boy complains to the terminally ill mother of his suffering. She puts the son off to a more beautiful, loyal one. But Lorenz always has to think of her beloved. 1612 the mother dies. Herr Algermann finally sees that Lorenz was not born to be a writer. The protégé is allowed to go out into the world, gifted with splendid steed gold . On the way, Lorenz is robbed down to his shirt by cattle thieves from the Harz Mountains. The poor, poorly dressed man began his riding career as a soldier in the free imperial city of Goslar . The empire has a new emperor again .

After six years of service in Goslar, Lorenz rides into the great war in 1618 under the mad Christian ; moves with the Protestants against the Catholics ; fights against Tilly . In every theater of war, in every opposing army, Lorenz meets Germans. So it actually goes against the Spaniards in front of Bergen op Zoom , but Lorenz shoots his best childhood friend off his horse in the field. At Stadtloo , Lorenz meets Levin Sander, but can not believe him. Wounded, the rider reached Wolfenbüttel with great difficulty. Mr. Algermann has long since passed away. The inn "Zum jumpingenden Roß" burned down.

In December 1627 the Pappenheimer besieged Wolfenbüttel. Among the rural population who seek refuge in the fortified city, Lorenz discovers on the steps of the church Beatae Mariae Virginis Susanna with her 10-year-old daughter Herzeleid. Lorenz procures accommodation for the two of them. The child is not baptized. Susanna's father cursed his daughter before she died: the water should go high over her body. The curse is being fulfilled. The besieged Pappenheim floods Wolfenbüttel with Oker water. Mother and child perish in the water in the winter cold. Lorenzen's desperate rescue attempts in the freezing cold water had been in vain. In 1632 the war was over for Rittmeister Scheibenhart. At Lützen he loses a leg and again missed Levin Sander.

The invalid narrator adds: His adversary Levin is ambushed by the Protestants on October 8, 1641 near Lutter am Barenberg . The soldier against rifle balls is slain in front of Hildesheim .
