The Vale do Aço ( Valley of Steel ) is a region in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais . It is an important center of the steel industry in South America and has the eleventh largest gross domestic product in Brazil. It covers an area of ​​808 km², on which 449,340 people lived in 2008 and generated a GDP of 6.8 real.

The region was created by the law Lei Complementar nº 51 of December 30, 1998 from the four municipalities of Coronel Fabriciano , Ipatinga , Santana do Paraíso and Timóteo . On January 12, 2006, she was raised to the Metropolitan Region Região Metropolitana do Vale do Aço . This metropolitan region also includes 24 municipalities of the metropolitan belt ( Colar metropolitano ), namely Açucena , Antônio Dias , Belo Oriente , Bom Jesus do Galho , Braúnas , Bugre , Caratinga , Córrego Novo , Dionísio , Dom Cavati , Entre Folhas , Iapu , Ipaba , Jaguaraçu , Joanésia , Marliéria , Mesquita , Naque , Periquito , Pingo-d'Água , São João do Oriente , São José do Goiabal , Sobrália and Vargem Alegre .

The region is well served by the Estrada de Ferro Vitória a Minas railway line , on which several cities of the Vale do Aço are located, by trunk roads and the Ipatinga airport .
