Palestinian Authority government of May 2012
The May 2012 government of the Palestinian Authority was formed after failed talks between Fatah and Hamas about a unity government. The government's legitimacy is disputed.
Government formation
The previous cabinet had already submitted its resignation in February 2011. After Ismail Haniyya and Mahmoud Abbas signed a reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas in early May 2011 , it was announced that a transitional government consisting of independent politicians would be formed. The talks between Fatah and Hamas failed, however, and so a new government was sworn in in May 2012, again without the participation of Hamas.
