Palestinian Authority government of May 2009

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Palestinian Authority government of May 2009 was formed after failed negotiations between Fatah and Hamas . The government's legitimacy is disputed.

Government formation

On March 7, 2009, the previous government resigned to pave the way for a unity government with the participation of Fatah and Hamas. President Mahmoud Abbas asked Prime Minister Fayyad to remain in office during the negotiations. After five rounds of such negotiations brokered by Egypt failed, Fayyad was once again entrusted with the post of prime minister by Abbas on May 19, the government reorganized and expanded to include 20 ministers.

resignation

On February 14, 2011, the Palestinian government headed by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad resigned. President Abbas had pushed for this step in order to achieve a replacement of several ministerial posts. Observers see this as a reaction to the political upheavals in Egypt, among other things .

After Ismail Haniyya and Mahmoud Abbas signed a reconciliation agreement between Fatah and Hamas in early May , it was announced that a transitional government consisting of independent politicians would be formed. This should organize presidential and parliamentary elections within one year and complete the establishment of an independent state.
