Regina Isecke (born January 5, 1953 - † June 26, 2015 ) was a German wheelchair tennis player .

Career

Regina Isecke began playing various sports as a child, including tennis . She has been in a wheelchair since an accident in 1971.

Beginnings in wheelchair sports

She achieved her first success in table tennis by winning several German championships in her class. She also won numerous medals in the shot put, speeding and swimming.

Wheelchair basketball

She also began wheelchair basketball in 1972 and was soon part of the German national team. With this she won the silver medal in 1976 and the gold medal at the Paralympic Games in 1980 and 1984 , as well as five world championships and several European championships. She ended her basketball career in 1988.

Wheelchair tennis

She turned to wheelchair tennis and started in the paraplegic class . At the German level, she won ten German championships.

Regina Isecke took part in two Paralympic Games in wheelchair tennis. In 1992 she reached the semi-finals in Barcelona in which she was defeated by Monique Kalkman . She won the subsequent game for third place against Janet McMorran and thus the bronze medal. She did not compete in doubles. In 1996 she was eliminated in Atlanta in the singles quarter-finals against Maaike Smit , in doubles she also reached the quarter-finals alongside Christa Ott , in which she was defeated by Hope Lewellen and Nacy Olson .

In the world rankings she achieved her best placings with third place in singles on January 26, 1993 and sixth place in doubles on September 6, 1994.

Since the end of her career, she has been active in promoting young talent in wheelchair tennis. She was also president of the German Wheelchair Tennis Association for many years. She was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf in 1984 and 1993 . Isecke died at the age of 62 after a brief, serious illness on June 26, 2015.

In July 2018 a street in Cologne-Junkersdorf was named after her.
