Maaike Smit (born August 7, 1966 in Emmeloord ) is a former Dutch wheelchair tennis player and wheelchair basketball player .

Career

Maaike Smit started wheelchair tennis at the age of 20 and started in the paraplegic class .

She took part in a total of three Paralympic Games in wheelchair tennis. In 1996 in Atlanta she immediately won the gold medal on her debut in singles after defeating Monique Kalkman in the final. She did not compete in doubles. At the Games in Sydney in 2000 she was defeated in the semifinals by Esther Vergeer , but then secured the bronze medal in the individual against Kimberly Blake . In doubles, she won her second gold alongside Esther Vergeer. In 2004 she and Vergeer defended their double title in Athens and won the gold medal again. In the singles Maaike Smit was eliminated this time in the round of 16.

In 1988 and 1992 she also took part in the games as a wheelchair basketball player.

At the Wheelchair Tennis Masters she was four times in the singles final. In 1997 she won against Monique Kalkman, in 1998, 1999 and 2001 she was defeated by Esther Vergeer. In the doubles competition, she won the tournament four times in a row from 2000 to 2003, in 2005 and 2007 she was again in the final. In Grand Slam tournaments , she celebrated winning the individual title at the US Open in 1996 and 2004 . In doubles she won a total of three titles: at the Australian Open in 2004 and 2005 and at the French Open in the 2007 season.

In the world rankings Maaike Smit had temporarily taken the lead in both singles and doubles. She succeeded for the first time in singles on April 8, 1997 and in doubles on October 2, 2000. Her last full season was in 2008.
