Names of settlers from 1858 in the soft sandstone

Register Cliff is an approximately 30 meter high sandstone cliff in Wyoming , USA , near the town of Guernsey . In the soft rock, settlers who traveled west on the Oregon , California and Mormon Trail left their names and often the year from around 1850.

Emergence

The place was also known by the names Register Rock and Sand Point Station . Over 700 names have been carved into the wall and into the rock formations in the area. Many settlers hoped to be able to give such a sign of life to friends and relatives who were behind them on the trail. In addition to the settlers, early hikers such as explorers and mountain men from 1829 and later soldiers and farmers also left their mark. At one point you can even see paintings by the North American Indians . There are three unknown graves in front of the wall in an old cemetery.

meaning

A day's journey after the settlers left Fort Laramie , they reached this spot to spend the night here near the North Platte River . The traces of the wagons can still be seen about 3.5 kilometers west on the Oregon Trail Ruts in an eroded sandstone rib . There used to be a trading post on the cliff , which became the Pony Express station in 1861 . Register Cliff was listed on the United States ' National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1970 . The wall is one of three significant places along the trails that have become known for this type of marking. The other spots are Independence Rock and Names Hill .

conservation

In order to protect the historical lettering, a barrier fence was built around part of the steep wall, erosion and vandalism have already destroyed some historical lettering. The cave at the base of the steep wall was created later to store potatoes from the nearby ranch and to protect them from the frost in winter. Later it was used to store machines.

Access to Register Cliff is free, and parking spaces are available directly on the wall.
