Reifenberg (or Reiffenberg ) is the name of a German noble family that lived in the Westerwald and Taunus .

history

The original seat of the von Reifenberg family was Reifenberg Castle (built around 1215) in Oberreifenberg .

In 1331 we find the first documented mention of Reifenberg Castle. In the first half of the 13th century, the Reifenberger clan split into two lines: the Wetterau (remaining on the Reifenberg family castle) and the Weller line, which settled in the Westerwald and in the 14th century, as the count's castle men von Sayn , who built the Burgmannshof at the foot of Sayn Castle, which was later converted into today 's Sayn Castle .

The sex of those von Hattstein (old spelling also: "Hazechenstein") was closely related, if not identical, to the sex of those von Reifenberg (old spelling also: "Riffinberg", often the spelling Reiffenberg). An identical coat of arms was also used. This knightly family originally came from the Westerwald area north of the Lahn or from the area around Limburg. The headquarters of the von Hattstein family was Hattstein Castle near Schmitten , around four kilometers from Reifenberg Castle. In 1226 a Conrad zu Hattstein died, whom Gensicke considers to be the brother of Cuno von Hattsteins, who in turn is said to have been identical to the "Cuno von Reifenberg" mentioned again in 1234.

Philipp Ludwig von Reifenberg

With Philipp Ludwig, the Wetterau line of the Reifenberg family died out in the male line. Philipp Ludwig's sister Johanna Walpurgis married Johann Lothar von Walbott-Bassenheim . The Reifenberger possessions in the Taunus then became the property of Count Waldbott von Bassenheim .
