from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The European Union 's Mission in Support of Security Sector Reform in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau , or EU SSR Guinea-Bissau for short , was a mixed civil and military ESDP mission in support of the security sector in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa .

It was decided on February 12, 2008 by the Council of EU Foreign and Defense Ministers . The Spanish General Juan Esteban Verástegui is in command of the mission . The initial mandate was granted until May 31, 2009. After several extensions, the mandate finally expired on September 30, 2010.

Under military command, a Guinea-Bissau army with 2000-2500 soldiers was to emerge, but it should not have any heavy artillery or armored vehicles. However, there should be heavily armed police units that could also be deployed under military command. Even before the plans could be implemented, the mission was ended for lack of a promising perspective.
