The European Union Aviation Security CSDP Mission in South Sudan (EUAVSEC-South Sudan) was a civilian mission in support of the expansion of Juba Airport in South Sudan into an international airport. It was decided by the Council of the European Union in June 2012 as part of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) of the EU and ended in January 2014.
mandate
The mandate comprised 35 international and 15 national employees and a budget of 12.5 million euros.
tasks
- Providing advice, mentoring, technical support and training for staff.
- Support and advice to the aviation security organization at the Ministry of Transport and at the airport as well as in the implementation of aviation security programs
- Assistance with the adoption of standard procedures at the airport.
There were no executive powers.
aims
The aim of the mission was to build an airport that complies with international standards, particularly with regard to security capacities. The aim was to help improve aviation security, border control and law enforcement at Juba International Airport.
South Sudan only gained independence in 2011 and did not have the appropriate infrastructure due to the protracted civil war.
