Reigns is a strategy game developed by Nerial and published by Devolver Digital . It takes place in a fictional medieval world in which the player slips into the role of a monarch who rules the kingdom by accepting or rejecting suggestions from advisers. The game was released in August 2016 for Android , iOS , Linux , macOS and Windows .

A sequel titled Reigns: Her Majesty , in which the player plays a queen, was released in December 2017. Reigns and the sequel came out in September 2018 under the joint title Reigns: Kings & Queens for the Nintendo Switch . The third part of the series, Reigns: Game of Thrones , was published in October 2018.

In the role of a medieval king, the player swipes a card representing an adviser to the right or left to accept or reject his proposal. Every decision has a consequence and changes the balance between the four pillars of society: the church, the people, the military and money. The king's reign ends when one of the four bars becomes full or empty and the game continues with the player controlling his heir. Various events in the game can also lead to the king's demise.

During the course of the game, the player can experience different types of events that are part of the story or are caused by decisions made by the player. Such events can have one-time or recurring effects on the game, such as: B. the death of the next advisor if his proposal is rejected.

    development

The game was developed by the London computer game studio Nerial. In an opinion piece published on Polygon , François Alliot, the game's lead developer, commented that the team “wanted to mock the way our society deals with complexity”, citing Brexit as an example. The developers wanted to make the player feel that the separation between the simplicity of the "swipe" control system and the consequences of their decisions inevitably leads to the demise of the king at the end of every reign.

The game's interactive soundtrack is available on Steam under the title Songs of Reigns .

    reception

According to Metacritic , Reigns has received “generally positive” ratings. Critics praised the simplicity of the control system and found it to be comparable to the user interface in the Tinder social app . However, Alex Hern from the Guardian found certain decisions in the game "nonsensical" and with unclear consequences.

The game won the international competition at the Ludicious Convention 2017. It was nominated for the "Best Mobile Game" category of the Unity Awards 2016.
