The Reihersee is a lake in Salzgitter , Lower Saxony . It is located southwest of Gebhardshagen in the Salzgitter ridge .

description

The lake is a former clarification pond (clarification pond 2), which was used for the sedimentation of the sludge resulting from the wet mechanical iron ore processing in the north of the Hannoversche Treue mine in Calbecht . The pond was in operation from May 1944 to 1952.

The planning and construction of the clarification pond began in 1942. The dam was 1000 m long, 51 m high, 213 m wide at its bottom and had a volume of 1.53 million m³. The dam that secured the lake to the north was built as an earthworks; overburden from nearby mining and from the construction of ore processing was used as building material . The dam had an incline of 22 degrees on the air side and 37 degrees on the water side. At the time of commissioning, the lake covered an area of 52 hectares. The sludge to be clarified from the Calbecht ore processing was pumped up over a 70 m difference in height to the 195 meters above sea level pond and flushed in via a ring main. The clarified water was piped back to the treatment plant for reuse. After the wet mechanical iron ore processing was stopped in 1976, the banks and the area around the lake were recultivated . Due to the silting up of the lake by the sludge brought in and the low inflow, the open water area has decreased to around 25 hectares.

The lake, which offers a suitable habitat for various water birds, is surrounded by forest areas on the Salzgitter ridge. Especially to the south, the open water surface changes into extensive reed areas . Open areas on the lakefront are partially populated by orchids and centaury . Only a few aquatic plants settle in the lake itself. A specialty is the rough candy algae, which is rare in southern Lower Saxony and forms extensive populations at the bottom of the water. A good eight hectares of the lake are silted up areas of standing water and are part of the landscape that is specially protected under the Federal Nature Conservation Act . An artificial drain prevents the lake from overflowing or the risk of a dam breaking.

The Reihersee is made accessible by a circular hiking trail.
