Reinaldo "Rey" Sagbini Echavez (born November 18, 1972 in Valledupar , Colombia ) is a Colombian filmmaker who lives in Berlin , Hamburg and Santa Marta , Colombia.

life and work

Reinaldo Sagbini is the ninth child of the businessman Antonio Sagbini and the housewife Yolanda Echavez († 2003). At the age of 17 he moved alone to the port city of Barranquilla , where he got by with odd jobs until he got a job as a production assistant at the regional broadcaster Tele Caribe , which allowed him to write stories, observe life and make the first cinematic To make attempts to walk. During this time he met directors like Pacho Bottía ( Juana tenía los pelos de oro - "Jauna had golden hair") and Victor Gaviria ( La vendedora de Rosas - "The rose seller"), whose works inspired him very much.

In 2000 Sagbini spent a year of volunteering in Devon , England. In the Camphill Devon Community , he worked in agriculture and cared for the disabled residents of the farm. During his stay, he and his English teacher built a theater group with disabled people and staged several public performances with them in Buckfastleigh and Totnes .

In 2001 Sagbini moved to Hamburg and began to study media culture (film) and ethnology at the university there. At that time he made his first two short documentaries: "Ali Ramadam - The Story of a Street Musician" (Germany) and "Así es Colombia" ("This is Colombia") (Colombia). After completing his BA at the University of Hamburg , he completed a postgraduate course at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg until 2007. Under his lecturers, the film directors Wim Wenders , Fatih Akın and Gerd Roscher , the short films In der Morgendämmerung and Invierno (“Winter”) were made. In 2005, together with Stepan Chomjakow and other young filmmakers, he founded Kinometer 5 , a platform for independent filmmakers in German and Colombian arthouse cinemas .

Sagbini is currently working on his first full-length documentary with the working title "El Viaje del Acordeón" ("The Great Journey of the Accordion")
