Reiner Schmidt (musician)

Reiner Schmidt (born December 6, 1942 in Gottlob , Kingdom of Romania , † April 21, 2011 in Boxberg ) was a German violist and conductor .

Life

Reiner Schmidt was born in the Romanian village Gottlob near Timișoara in the Banat . He belonged to the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians .

He attended the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Cluj and passed the state examination there in 1965, whereupon he found a job at the Philharmonic in Cluj. During a concert tour to London , he fled to the West and never returned to his orchestra. At the Detmold Academy of Music Reiner Schmidt Bruno Giuranna and was Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome designed as a master student of Dino Asciolla.

After his audition at the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie in 1972, Reiner Schmidt was accepted as principal violist in this orchestra. He played with artists like Arthur Grumiaux . He was also visiting professor in Rome and principal violist at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (1981–1983). In Germany he was principal violist in the orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival and the Frankfurt Opera and Museum Orchestra . He taught at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts and later accepted a professorship at the Würzburg University of Music . In 2008 he was professor of music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music .

His varied musical activities extended from playing solo, chamber music, teaching, being editor at Peters-Verlag and festival director to very successful conducting at home and abroad. Reiner Schmidt is also the founder of the Förderkreis Bronnbacher Klassik eV
