He spent school and youth in Hofheim am Taunus. He learned a machine fitter and cabinet maker before he was drafted into military service. After serving in the war, he moved to Würzburg in 1948, where he became head of an industrial company. He met the sculptors Fried Heuler (1889–1959) and Julius Bausenwein (1913–1962), who were his teachers as professional sculptors.

His works, mainly animal sculptures cast in bronze , received special recognition through acquisitions by public institutions, for example in the Berlin Zoological Garden - a large gorilla and a group of vulture guinea fowl or a group of secretaries in the Münster zoo. But it can also be found in the Würzburg State Garden Show. In 1991, the Sparkasse in Würzburg donated the sculptures Salamanca bull , shoebills and pelicans .

Annual solo exhibitions have been held since 1963. From 1975 he took part several times in the great art exhibition in the Haus der Kunst in Munich. In 1985, the Frankfurt Stock Exchange commissioned two bronze sculptures from Dachlauer to celebrate its 400th anniversary. The sculptures Bulle & Bär are located on the Börsenplatz in Frankfurt am Main and are a much-shown motif on German television.

His widow Else Dachlauer donated eight of his sculptures to the Stadtmuseum Hofheim in 1996 as a bequest from the artist. Further works have been in the Würzburg Municipal Museum since 1998. Else Dachlauer died in 2012.
