action

Scientist Charles Graiman is ambushed and killed during a power outage at his home. The burglars are after various hard disk drives and a black Ford Mustang, which is self-employed and goes straight to Charles' daughter Sarah and can barely save her from being kidnapped. Following his programming, the Knight Industries Three Thousand seeks out Sarah's former friend Mike, and manages to recruit him for Sarah's protection. While on the run they receive a call from Charles, who was believed to be dead and who was covered by a double during the attack. He got through to Mike's mother Jennifer and is now waiting with her in a motel. Following Charles' earlier instructions, Mike now informs FBI agent Carrie Rivai, who is investigating the murder. Unfortunately, this informs the corrupt sheriff of the hiding place, who immediately informs the gangsters.

Mike, Sarah, Charles and Jennifer meet at the motel, where Mike also learns that KITT is not the first car of this type and that his father, who allegedly abandoned him and his mother, was the driver of that first KITT was.

When they reach KITT, they can just prevent KITT from being brought under control by the hackers of the gangsters with an emergency shutdown. But then the other gangsters arrive, kill Jennifer and run away with Charles, who is supposed to give them access to a military computer system. Mike and Carrie, who has also arrived, can overwhelm the gangsters who have stayed behind, and Mike and Sarah go on the hunt for the gangsters. They only manage to stop this by reactivating KITT and thus its nanotech armor and getting in the way of the escape vehicle. The corrupt sheriff and the hacker die in the collision. Charles and the driver can be rescued injured.

At Jennifer's funeral, Mike first meets his father, who explains to him why he left her behind. He also encourages Mike to accept Charles' offer and follow in his footsteps. After KITT has been repaired and improved by Sarah, Mike goes on the hunt for the people behind the attack.
