Reinhard Church

The former Reinhardskirche in Altenhaßlau (Linsengericht) , today a district of Linsengericht , was the Lutheran church of the place since 1726 .

Church political requirements

The counts of the Hanau-Münzenberg line had been reformed since the end of the 16th century . According to the principle of Jus reformandi , the entire county was therefore a Reformed creed. On January 12, 1642, Count Johann Ernst , the last male representative of the Hanau-Münzenberg line, died. The closest male relative was the Lutheran Count Friedrich Casimir von Hanau-Lichtenberg . This ultimately pursued an expansive, pro-Lutheran policy. Lutheran congregations soon formed in the county, particularly through Lutheran court staff and top officials. In spite of the Calvinist Reformation, there were also remnants of the Lutheran population who went to neighboring Lutheran "foreign countries" for worship, e.g. B. the county of Isenburg . The Count's policy soon led to the building of Lutheran churches , which was under the last count of the Hanau-Lichtenberg line in the county of Hanau-Munzenberg , Johann Reinhard III. (1712-1736), was forced.

History of construction and use

The Reinhardskirche in Altenhaßlau was built in the years 1724–26 through the renovation of a hunting arsenal belonging to the Hanau count. The architect of the renovation was Christian Ludwig Hermann . He used the existing rectangular building made of sandstone and provided it with a mansard roof and - instead of a church tower - with a two-storey roof turret .

In the course of the Hanau Union of 1818, the Calvinist and Lutheran congregations in all places of the former County of Hanau-Münzenberg were merged. In order to be able to further distinguish the church buildings previously named after the denominations, the "Lutheran Church" was now called " Reinhardskirche ". It served as a church service room until 1961, but then it was given up in favor of the Martinskirche . In 1962 the church interior was divided horizontally with a false ceiling to be used as a youth center. Remains of the original stucco ceiling from 1725 have been preserved. Today the building is used as a community center.
