Henri Carré

Henri Joseph Carré (born March 23, 1870 in Avize , Département Marne ; † June 5, 1938 in Maisons-Alfort near Paris ) was a French veterinarian , infectiologist , discoverer of the canine distemper virus and co-inventor of the first vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease . In his honor, distemper is also called Carré's disease ( French : maladie de Carré ).

Career

Carré completed compulsory schooling and the Lycée in Avize. He then studied veterinary medicine at the University of Alfort . After graduating, he did an internship at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, which sent him on various trips abroad. In 1901 he was appointed by his teacher Edmond Nocard (1850-1903) to the Laboratoire National de Recherches in Maisons-Alfort, where he devoted himself to research into foot and mouth disease . In 1905 he achieved the world's first isolation of the distemper pathogen. Between 1904 and 1907 he conducted studies on infectious anemia in horses and swine fever . From 1906 to 1912 he researched the infectious agalacty of sheep and goats . From 1920 he worked again with the study of foot-and-mouth disease in collaboration with S. Vallée. He demonstrated that different types of foot-and-mouth disease virus exist and finally developed the first vaccination against the disease in 1925, which was based on viruses inactivated by formol .

After Edmond Nocard's death in 1903, Carré followed him as director of the Laboratoire National . In 1908 he was elected a member of the Académie Vétérinaire . He was an officer in the French Legion of Honor and an officer of the Ordre du Mérite agricole . On the occasion of his retirement in 1937 he was appointed Dirécteur Honoraire (honorary director) of the laboratory.

Carré married Marie-Rose Neulat on March 12, 1912 and had three daughters Nicole, Jeanine and Denise with her.
