The equestrian statue Welf VI. is a work of art created in 2010 by Helmut Ackermann , which was installed on December 13, 2010 in the Fuggergarten on the Schweizerberg in Memmingen , which is part of the Fugger building . It is the only equestrian statue in Memmingen.

Artwork

The artist created the first model of the horse in 2003. Only later did the idea come up with Welf VI, who died on December 15, 1191 in Memmingen . , Margrave of Tuscany and adversary Conrad III. as an equestrian monument. The rider and his horse were cast in a foundry in Straubing . The stonemason Ludwig Schütz from Memmingen created the pedestal of the statue . Other works of art by the Memmingen artist Helmut Ackermann have been placed in the city.

Welf VI. is shown in the pose of the rider. There is a globe under the right hoof of his horse. In the Duke's right hand there is a small figure of a naked woman. There was not much in common with his wife Uta von Schauenburg . In the Historia Welforum it is said: “His love for her was little, he preferred intercourse with other women.” Welf VI. turned to other goals, sold his property to his nephew , the later Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa , from whom he received the property back as a fief. Charity and a sense of art shaped his last years, which earned him the nickname of mild . The equestrian statue was donated by the Memmingen municipal housing association. On December 13, 2010, Mayor Ivo Holzinger unveiled the memorial.

criticism

The memorial stands on the presumed place of the former Welfenburg. Part of the population criticized its erection in an unknown, not visible place and suggested that the statue be relocated to a representative one.
