Ivo Holzinger (born April 4, 1948 in Aalen ) is a German local politician ( SPD ) and an honorary citizen of the city of Memmingen . From 1980 to 2016 he was Lord Mayor of the independent city of Memmingen . Having won six mayor elections (every six years), he was the longest-serving mayor in Germany.

Life

After graduating from high school, Holzinger studied law and economics at the universities of Würzburg , Tübingen and Bonn and passed the two state examinations in Würzburg . The doctorate to Dr. iur. utr. he received it with a municipal science topic in 1974. After completing his doctorate, his professional career began at the Bavarian Finance Administration in Würzburg and Nuremberg . In 1980 he moved to the Federal Ministry of Finance in Bonn .

Holzinger is married and has one son.

In the 1980 mayor election in Memmingen, he ran against the CSU candidate , the lawyer Georg Volkheimer . In 1986, 1992, 1998, 2004 and 2010, Holzinger was confirmed in his office in the first ballot. In the first three elections he partially achieved over 80% of the votes cast, in the 2004 election he prevailed against three opposing candidates with an absolute majority of 50.5% of the votes in the first ballot. In the mayor election on July 4, 2010, he scored 52.5% in the first ballot against five opposing candidates, with a turnout of 54.5%. Due to his age, he was unable to apply for the mayor election on October 23, 2016. His successor Markus Kennerknecht ( SPD ) was sworn in on November 21, 2016 .

During his tenure, the city of Memmingen ( classified as a regional center since 1993 ) developed into one of the economically strongest cities in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia and, with the industrial area North, has the second largest contiguous industrial area in Swabia.

Honors

On October 17, 2016, it was decided in the city council that he may hold the title of former mayor from November 21, 2016 upon leaving the service . He was also given honorary citizenship at the same plenary session . On December 9, 2016, he was awarded the Bavarian Constitutional Medal in gold.

Ivo Holzinger has held numerous honorary positions , including on the board of the Bavarian Association of Cities , the voluntary association of all Bavarian cities, and in the main committee of the German Association of Cities . He is district chairman of the Swabian cities, chairman of the administrative and legal committee of the Bavarian city council and chairman of the social democratic community for local politics in Bavaria.

In addition, Holzinger is a member of the Diocesan Council of the Diocese of Augsburg and district chairman of the Memmingen / Unterallgäu district association of the Red Cross and has been a member of the Presidium of the Mérite Européen Friends and Supporters Germany eV since 2017
