Markus Kennerknecht (born May 25, 1970 in Kempten (Allgäu) ; † December 28, 2016 in Durach ) was a German politician ( SPD ). He was Lord Mayor of Memmingen from November 21, 2016 until his death .

Life

After finishing school in Waltenhofen and Kempten, Kennerknecht completed an apprenticeship as a power plant electronics technician . He graduated from the Kempten Vocational School (1991–1993) with a subject-specific higher education entrance qualification. In 1993/94 he did his community service. He then studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Nuremberg . From 2003 to 2006 he completed an extra-occupational master's degree in project management in Augsburg .

Professional stations were the civil engineering department of the city of Kempten (1999–2004), project management in London (2004–2006) and in Basel (2006–2007). After working as a project manager in an engineering office in Kempten (2007–2010), he moved to the Waltenhofen community as a building authority (2010–2014), where he was also the managing director of Nahversorgung GmbH. From 2014 he was the city architect of Immenstadt im Allgäu .

On December 28, 2016, Kennerknecht died of heart failure while jogging at the age of 46. He left behind his wife and two daughters. On January 4, 2017, the funeral service was held in the parish church of the Holy Spirit in his home town of Durach in the presence of around 500 people, and a requiem took place in St. Joseph on the same evening .

politics

Kennerknecht only joined the SPD a few weeks before his nomination as an applicant for the office of Lord Mayor in Memmingen. With only one abstention, he was unanimously nominated by his party and the FDP . His candidacy was supported by the incumbent Ivo Holzinger , who had been at the top of the city for 36 years and was no longer able to run for reasons of age.

In the first ballot on October 23, 2016, he received the best vote of the four applicants with 44.6% of the votes. In the runoff election on November 6, 2016, he won against Robert Aures (CSU) with 59.2% of the vote and became the new mayor. After his unexpected death, Mayor Margareta Böckh (CSU) initially ran the business as his deputy until Manfred Schilder (CSU) was introduced to the office on March 21, 2017 .

Part-time activities

Markus Kennerknecht has been a teacher at the Allgäu technical school since 2007 . In 2014/2015 he worked for the Hanns Seidel Foundation as a consultant for the Nanjing University of Cooperative Education , Jiangsu / China .
