Memminger Freedom Prize 1525

The Memmingen Freedom Prize 1525 is a prize awarded to people who have made a special contribution to human freedom. It is intended to commemorate the Twelve Articles of 1525, which are considered to be the first written human rights in Europe.

In 2000, the prize was awarded on the occasion of the 475th anniversary of the twelve articles . The then Federal President Johannes Rau gave the eulogy for the award in the Martinskirche . With the city council resolution on the statutes of the city of Memmingen on the "Memminger Freiheitpreis 1525" , the prize was legally created on December 21, 2001. The statutes came into force on January 5, 2002. The statutes consist of a preamble and four paragraphs .

According to Section 1 of the Articles of Association, the prize consists of a certificate recognizing the merits of the award winner in the sense of the preamble to the Articles of Association, as well as a monetary prize that is not fixed in the amount. According to Section 2 of the Articles of Association, a selection committee should decide on the award. This consists of the Lord Mayor of the City of Memmingen, a representative of the Board of Trustees of the Memmingen Freedom Prize 1525, the first pastor of St. Martin and four other personalities from culture, science and public life. Section 3 determines the advisory board, which has the task of electing and dismissing the four personalities from culture, science and public life on the selection committee. Furthermore, it should promote the memory of the composition of the Twelve Articles and the knowledge of their significance for the democratic development in Germany and monitor compliance with the foundation's purpose. The advisory board consists of the Lord Mayor of Memmingen, one representative from each of the parliamentary groups represented in the city council , one representative of the Board of Trustees of the Memmingen Freedom Prize 1525, the dean of the Evangelical-Lutheran dean's office in Memmingen , the dean of the Catholic Church in Memmingen and one representative of the founders of the Price together. The association of donors consists of the personalities and representatives of legal persons or associations of persons who have donated an amount of at least 3000 euros since the last award . The last paragraph of the statutes stipulates that the statutes come into force on the day after they were published in the Memmingen official journal of the city of Memmingen, which happened on January 4, 2002.

The prize was first awarded on October 5, 2005. The then President of the Bundestag Wolfgang Thierse gave the laudation in Martinskirche on Gyula Horn , who received the award for his work as Hungarian Foreign Minister and Prime Minister in connection with the opening of the border between Austria and Hungary in June 1989. Gyula Horn received the prize money of 15,000 euros, the certificate set out in the statutes of the prize and a medal.

The second award ceremony took place on March 20, 2009. The then Federal President Horst Köhler gave the laudatory speech for the second prize winner Reiner Kunze in the Martinskirche . A medal, a certificate and 15,000 euros were presented to the winner as prizes. The award ceremony was embedded in an extensive supporting program. Following the presentation by the mayor Ivo Holzinger and Horst Köhler, a reception took place in the town hall . After that, the Twelve Articles were performed by amateur actors in the marketplace. Horst Köhler and Reiner Kunze then spoke to the population from the balcony of the large guild .

The third award ceremony took place on December 7, 2013. The young Pakistani freedom fighter Malala Yousafzai , who was honored for her work against the Taliban regime, was chosen as the winner. As a trip to Memmingen for the award winner, who is living in exile in Britain , turned out to be too difficult, the award ceremony took place in Oxford .
