Relaxation attempt

The relaxation test is an experimental method from strength theory , a sub-area of rheology , to determine the relaxation time in a deformable solid . A test specimen with certain dimensions is pre-tensioned in a defined manner and thus subjected to shear , elongation or compression . The time course ( decrease , relaxation) of the force that is required to maintain the initial deformation is measured .

A characteristic value measured in the relaxation test is the relaxation voltage . This describes the mechanical stress that occurs in a ( metallic ) material , namely:

  • at a fixed, constant temperature above the transition temperature
  • after a certain exposure time and
  • with an impressed initial plastic deformation .

The results of a relaxation test can be explained with the help of rheological models .
