Rembo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rembo (formerly BpBatch ) is software from Rembo technology SaRL from Switzerland. The company founded in April 1999 was taken over by IBM at the end of August 2006. The portmanteau Rembo is made up of the words Re Motely M anageable B oot O pera tion together.

history

The predecessor of Rembo called BpBatch was developed by Marc Vuilleumier Stückelberg and David Clerc at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Geneva . They started in the summer of 1996. A first version was made available in August 1998.

In the same year the decision was made not to issue a major release of BpBatch, so the focus was on developing the successor. The BpBatch project ended with the release of the last version 1.3 in February 2000 .

After the founding of Rembo technology SaRL in April 1999, the first publications on May 31, 2000 with build number 002 were the versions Rembo 1.0 Classic and Rembo 1.0 Pro. The last release under the first version branch was Build 1.1.026 on August 26, 2002.

The first release of the second version of the Rembo Toolkit took place on September 12th, 2002. Like the previous major release, it had the build number 002. The developers announced Build 2.0.059 on November 14th, 2005 as the last version of this version branch.

Version 4.0 of Rembo with build number 008 was released on December 1st, 2004. The last version was build 032 from April 10, 2006.

Functionality

It is a mini operating system that is booted via PXE before the actual operating system and is used for image management . Rembo automatically checks whether a newer version of the image is available on the server and updates its own computer if necessary. Rembo also protects the PC from changes because it resets all changes made to the currently valid image each time it is started. Thus, the principle is Sheila ( S ven healing end A rbeitsstation) implemented. The procedure of the proprietary Rembo is similar to that of LINBO . With Rembo you can also set several operating systems. The program is used to secure and administer large networks.

development

A programming language based on C , known as Rembo-C, was specially developed for this software .

Several variants were developed based on this programming language:

  • Rembo / mySHN - an extension developed by SBE network solutions (mySHN - my Self Healing Network) for better operation of the Rembo functions. It is already in version 5.
  • Rembo / Tivoli - an extension integrated into the company's existing Tivoli solution by IBM .

distribution

It is used, for example, in the Linux model solution for schools in the state of Baden-Württemberg between 2002 and 2008, initially with BpBatch (until 2004) then from 2004 to 2008 with Rembo / mySHN (support only up to version 2.0), within the framework of the between 2000 and 2005 sponsored initiative "maus (media at our schools) - the media offensive at Brandenburg schools" of the state of Brandenburg , in the school servers logoDIDACT and snv (school network administrator), at the universities of Bielefeld and Regensburg , all (non-vocational) schools in the city of Bielefeld , also at over 360 schools in Berlin, Lower Saxony, Saarland and at the general trade school Basel, AGSBS (Switzerland).

Since August 2008, the software has also been in use in Cologne schools (in so-called “notebook classes” and at “CAS schools”).
