logoDIDACT - the school server solution ( logoDIDACT ) is a server - Distribution for the operation of information technology infrastructure in schools, especially an educational school network . LogoDIDACT is developed by SBE network solutions GmbH from Heilbronn .

history

The predecessor of logoDIDACT with the name EduNetServer , published in 2008, was based on the Linux version of the educational model solution of the state of Baden-Württemberg ( paedML ).

The further development of EduNetServer under its current name (logoDIDACT) began in the middle of 2007. The underlying client-server model was completely rewritten in Java and Ruby . When logoDIDACT was launched in May 2008, the school server solution was based on Debian 4 and Rembo / mySHN 5.

In 2009 there was a change to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and the exchange to the subsequent LTS version (12.04) in 2012.

The main focus of developments in 2013 included the integration of tablets , notebooks and smartphones , changes to the architecture and the introduction of virtualization . To do this, they use the integrated RADIUS server and, as a client, an access point that communicates with the end device in encrypted form (additionally secured by a certificate). A notebook or tablet can be used to access data in the school network , either using a browser or an OpenVPN connection (also from outside the school network). The Pydio or OpenVPN app also enables access to the Samba file shares via the smartphone. The migration to Ubuntu 12.04 could not solve fundamental problems and we did not see ourselves prepared for future requirements. In early 2013, the development of a virtual environment based on LinuX Containers began . Programs that require a certain version of a dependency, such as Moodle ( PHP 5.3.3) or Zarafa (PHP 5.2.10), can also be used side by side.

With the appearance of logoDIDACT 2.0 at didacta in February 2015, the changeover to LXC containers and the update to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS was completed. In addition to evaluations of web filters or log entries for registration, functions for WLAN management that enable optimal load distribution of WLAN devices have also been incorporated. In addition, they presented a digital signage (digital notice board) with which pupils can find out about school activities or substitutions , for example . To do this, they use Xibo, an open source program for digital signage, supplemented by a mini PC .

logoDIDACT received the Comenius Seal six times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) and in 2014 also the Comenius EduMedia Medal of the Society for Education and Information (Berlin).

The school server solution is used in over 4000 schools in Germany .

At all general education schools in Bielefeld and in over 560 schools in Berlin , logoDIDACT is in use on over 425 servers for the school network. In addition, logoDIDACT is also used outside of the German education sector. Schools in Austria (e.g. the agricultural vocational and technical school Freistadt), Spain ( German School Madrid ), Egypt ( German Evangelical High School Cairo ) and the United Arab Emirates (German International School Dubai) use this school server software.
