The German Evangelical High School (DEO) in Cairo ( Arabic المدرسة الألمانیة الإنجیلیة الثانویة بالقاهرة) is one of eight recognized German schools abroad in Egypt . It pursues the concept of an integrated meeting school , i. This means that both German students and students of Egyptian or other descent are accepted. There is the possibility of taking the German school leaving examination (Abitur) after twelve years of school. Today the school has around 1,300 students, over 85 percent of whom are Egyptians.

history

The school was founded in 1873 by the German Evangelical Congregation and was initially a small church school for a long time, led by the respective pastor of the congregation. The school grew steadily over the years and experienced numerous changes in the course of the social upheavals in Egypt.

In the course of history the school changed its location. In 1908 she moved to Bulaq . During the First World War the school was closed, only reopened in 1930 and closed again in 1939. It wasn't until eight years after the Second World War that the Sharia Dr.-Mahmoud-Azmi in Zamalek was reopened in 1953 under Director Artur Hachmeister . A few years later the school (also in Zamalek) moved to Sharia Al Mansur Muhammad; near the “faculty of Modern Arts” and the headquarters of the DAAD. Karl Alban became the new director in 1962. Since the school, which was housed in several old villa buildings, grew to several hundred students over the years, a new building was built in Dokki , 6 Sharia Dokki, which was ready for occupancy in March 1977. From the eleventh grade onwards, Muslim and Protestant religious instruction have been held together (co-educational) since 2001.

Traditions

Every year there is a competition between the DEO and the German School Athens (DSA) in the disciplines of swimming , athletics and either basketball , football or volleyball . In addition, one team flies alternately to the city of the other.

The Christmas bazaar, the Klaus-Heller-Lauf and the “bread action”, in which food is collected for poor residents, are also traditional.

The German Evangelical High School also organizes the annual pyramid run, which takes place in February at the pyramids of Giza. This is a running route of 8 kilometers, the start and end point is the Mykerinos pyramid . This run has been running since 1976 and was only suspended in 1991 due to safety concerns.

The DEO takes part in the annual Jugend musiziert competition of German schools in the Eastern Mediterranean!
