The Remeliik is a Pacific-class patrol boat of the Palau Division of Marine Law Enforcement . It was designed and built by Australia and donated to the State of Palau to provide surveillance of the Exclusive Economic Zone . The Convention on the Law of the Sea , which came into force in 1994, enlarged the Exclusive Economic Zone to a 200 km wide strip around the islands. After agreements with the Pacific Island Forum , Australia felt compelled to build a ship class of small patrol boats and give them away to twelve small states, including Palau, because they were suddenly no longer able to monitor their own territory.

The Remeliik was designed to run for 20 years and Australia will replace it with a Guardian-class boat in 2019 .

The ship is named after the former President Haruo Remeliik .

Calls

In February 2016, Remeliik was in the international press when The New York Times Magazine reported an article about the Remeliik chase and capture of a " Taiwanese pirate ship, the Shin Jyi Chyuu ".

In December 2016, the Remeliik brought up a ship that, according to the authorities, served as a “mother ship” for a squadron of smaller poaching boats. An aggregation device and 30 tons of illegally caught fish were also discovered on board. The ship did not have a fishing license at all and did not keep a catch log.

In March 2018, the Remeliik then brought up a Filipino ship that was caught poaching. On this ship, the Remelik had to rescue the crew because the ship had an engine failure.
