René Louis Victor Cagnat ( October 10, 1852 - March 27, 1937 in Paris ) was a French epigraphist .

René Cagnat devoted himself to the municipal militias in the Roman Empire in his first scientific work from 1880, and in 1882 to indirect taxes among the Romans. In 1886 he published an Introduction to Latin Epigraphy , which saw several editions. His most lasting achievement was the founding of the magazine L'Année épigraphique , in which previously widely scattered reports on epigraphy are published. Since the 1880s, Cagnat devoted himself in particular to the inscriptions of North Africa . At Theodor Mommsen's request , he worked on the North African inscriptions for the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, first with Johannes Schmidt , and later with Hermann Dessau . In the 1890s, the French government gave him control of the North African museums and epigraphic research there. Between 1906 and 1927 Cagnat played a major role in the publication of the Inscriptiones Graecae ad res Romanas pertinentes (compilation of Greek inscriptions with thematic reference to the Roman Empire).

Cagnat had been a professor at the Collège de France since 1887 , in 1895 he was elected to the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres , in 1904 at the request of Otto Hirschfeld and Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
