René Herbst (born March 18, 1891 in Paris ; † September 29, 1982 there ) was a French designer and interior designer .

Life

René Herbst was one of the leading French furniture and interior designers. He studied in London and Frankfurt and went on study trips to Russia and Italy. When Le Corbusier and Jean Puiforcat founded the Union des Artistes Modernes (UAM) in 1930 , Herbst was one of the first members with Robert Mallet-Stevens and Francis Jourdain . This association was a backlash against the decorative excesses of Art Deco, with the aim of promoting the ideals of modernism through exhibitions in the annual salons where the artists and designers showed their designs and through publications. In the 1940s, these were organized as New Objectivity under the title Formes Utiles (Useful Forms). In 1945 Herbst took over the chairmanship of the UAM.

Main features of his work

In the 1920s, René Herbst was known as "l'homme d'acier", which meant that he designed steel furniture. He was one of the first to experiment with the new furniture material tubular steel in the late 1920s. René Herbst produced his furniture designs in limited editions with his own interior design company, Etablissements René Herbst. The high gloss of the steel pipe used by Herbst, z. For example, the armchair designed in 1928 with a frame made of flat steel and curved tubular steel, the back and seat cushions covered with fabric, illustrates the labor-intensive furniture production. These are juxtaposed with designs that are reduced to the minimum, such as the Sandows Chair or the Fauteuil de repos designed between 1928 and 1929. These designs belong to a series of seating furniture in which he used rubber tensioning belts ("sandows"). The constructive simplicity and transparency give these chairs a minimalist flair. The commissioned work for Yvette Labrousse , the Begum Aga Khan, is one of Herbst's significant and qualitative work .

He also provided the design for the Pavillon de la Publicité of the Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne from 1937.
