René Labat

René Labat (born June 5, 1904 in Saint-Loubès , † April 3, 1974 in Paris ) was a French ancient orientalist . From 1952 until his death he was a professor at the Collège de France , as well as a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres and the German Archaeological Institute .

Labat studied at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris until 1932, where he taught Akkadian the following year . In 1938 he received his doctorate ès lettres . Labat has contributed to many important works, including the Encyclopædia Universalis , the Cambridge Ancient History and the Fischer Weltgeschichte . His Manuel d'épigraphie akkadienne , along with the more recent work by Rykle Borger, is one of the authoritative reference works for deciphering the cuneiform .
