René Ponk (born October 21, 1971 in Amsterdam ) is a former Dutch football player . The goalkeeper was active in the Netherlands and Spain between 1994 and 2009 .
Player career
Ponk slipped into the professional squad of Eredivisie representative FC Utrecht in the summer of 1994 . In his first year as a professional, the goalkeeper made five appearances, making his debut in the top Dutch league. In order to be able to give him more playing practice, the FCU officials decided to lend him to the then relegated VVV Venlo . There Ponk prevailed and was the goalkeeper of the Venlo club. In the 1996/97 season he returned to Utrecht. There he got more employment opportunities, but after a year he moved to SD Compostela abroad . In Pony's first year with the then Primera División team, the club was relegated in 17th place. Even so, the goalkeeper stayed for another two years before returning to the Netherlands. There he took part in FC Dordrecht , a second division team at the time. Ponk was number one between the posts of the FCD for a year , but switched again. FC Utrecht, where his career began, secured the services of the player. Finally, after his return to FCU Ponks began his most successful time as a professional footballer. Between 2002 and 2004 the team reached the final of the KNVB Cup three times in a row and won the Cup in 2003 and 2004. In his last season for Utrecht, the fans voted him third in the FCU Player of the Year . In the summer he was finally replaced by the young Michel Vorm , who was loaned to FC Den Bosch the previous year . Ponk eventually moved to league rivals Sparta Rotterdam . He held the class with the Spartans for two years and transferred again in the summer of 2007. At HFC Haarlem , he sat on the bench for two more years before saying goodbye to professional football. He played his last professional game in the 2007/08 season on March 28, 2008.

Coaching career
After his career as a professional footballer, Ponk is aiming for a career as a coach. In 2009 he got his first job as a goalkeeping coach at the lower class SV Argon .
