Renate Herrmann-Winter

Renate Herrmann-Winter (born January 11, 1933 in Greifswald ) is a German professor of Low German .

Life

Herrmann-Winter studied German and English from 1952 to 1956 at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald and then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for the German Language at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin . She wrote her dissertation in Rostock in 1963 .

In 1992 the newly created chair for Low German Language and Literature at the University of Greifswald was filled with Herrmann-Winter. There she introduced, among other things, the new course in Low German Philology.

After taking up her professorship, she reestablished the work on the Pomeranian Dictionary , which had been stopped for political reasons in 1969 and which she has since continued on her own. The first part of the large dictionary was published in 1997.

In 1997, in her work Heimatsprache , she examined the relationship to the Low German language during the GDR between exclusion and ideological integration .

Herrmann-Winter retired in 1998, but held lectures again at Greifswald University from 2003 after the university had not refilled the professorship for Low German.

She is a member of the Historical Commission for Pomerania .
